Outing 3: Animals

Animal Crossing
By Annabel Clifton

This was originally a puddle that has dried up on a place where all animals go by to get the the various woods they habitat. Here there are deer prints, doggie prints and a couple of duck prints. I like this because it's a different way of photographing animals. Also I like the various different grass and straw that's got mixed up with it as i feel it sets off the colour of the mud. I could improve this if I'd have shot a couple of pictures putting the animal crossing into context. For example the various other woods and the gateway it was positioned by. All in all I feel this was a successful image.

Corn Bins
By Annabel Clifton

These are the containers on the farm that harvest corn gets stored in. I shot this image at night with the bulb function button. Originally I set out to photograph the shooting stars one night but i couldn't get them to show up. I lightened this image by altering the brightness on photoshop. I really like this image as it gives an adventurous eery sense about it. I feel this was a successful shot as it's ambiguity regarding what it is is mysterious. To improve on this i could try flashes and maybe a little lighting to make it more effective.

Deers daily footpath
By Annabel Clifton

This is the woods on many occasions I have spotted deer, this was took trying to capture a deer that ran in the wood as a test shot to ensure aperture and stutterspeed was correct. However I have not been fortunate enough to capture a deer yet so in this aspect this photograph is ineffective. On the other hand it was a happy mistake. I like the way the barbed wire is out of focus to give a trapped out effect. Also the plant and trees around the photograph frame it nicely making it nice to look at.

Destructive weather
By Annabel Clifton

Here I was trying to capture what the rain had done to the wheat and issues in the farm. This was successful as i really like the colours. The sky is a lovely shade and the wheat looks golden. I placed the track along the side to feed you round the picture. This is ineffective in a way because it is a bit of a dull subject.

Cows
By Annabel Clifton

This photograph is effective as the cows are nicely spread out. I also like the wonky ness of the picture and how it is framed with the wheat and the sky, with the subject taking up minimal space. I should experiment with more cow images and get some close ups to get a more effective shot.

Cobweb
By Annabel Clifton

Here I experimented with cobweb macro photography again, only this time to make it a more interesting image I found one with a backdrop. I find this is effective. However it may work better in black and white, and i should edit it in photoshop. Also I like how the piece of corn frames the subject and because of the corn  the cobwebs not the first thing you see.

Dinner Time
By Annabel Clifton
This photograph is effective because only the nostril is in focus and the blurred image implies action which really works in this photograph. I also love the colours and how only the nose is in the frame. It could be improved by increasing the shallow depth of field so the nostril stands out even more.

Dinner Time (2)
By putting the eyes in the frame and experimenting in this way makes the image less effective compared with the one above, this is because there are too many focal point when I only want the nose to be on focus. I feel this image is far less effective.

Untitled
By Annabel Clifton
This photograph is effective as the markings on the horse are very interesting. However maybe a close up of the nose would be more effective as there's to much going on and it feels a little unorganised.

Fly
By Annabel Clifton

This is one of my favourite horse photographs. I took the inspiration from "horse's morror- miguel rio branco" the closeness of the eye is very effective as it adds intimacy to the image. To make this more effective next time I could use a macro lens to pick up even more detail.

Running Horse
By Annabel Clifton
This image would be more effective if took at a side angle. However the horse is nicely centre and looks like he's running towards the corner of the frame, which is a nice touch. The following 3 images would be useful to sell to the horse owner at the farm, or enter into a competition.  I could even use the to put in my portfolio to show i have a broad range of subjects I like to capture.

Stallion
By Annabel Clifton

This image is effective as it is slightly side on and looking directly at the camera. I also love the little hoof flick at the back and I am going to try and sell it to the horse owner as i feel this captures the horses personality. It's also effective how the horse looks very alert.

Summer - Wild and Fresh

For my scond entery I took a different percpective on the definition of what wild and fresh could mean. I came up with the thought that fresh could be new seasons coming and all the things you havent been able to do in the previous 3 seasons. Taking this into account I've tried to capture summer. Also taking the defintion of wild in a diffent sense, taking photographs of a night out in clubs and pubs. I have used black and white throughout this set of photographs as monochrome is symbollic of past times as family old photographs are mostly monochrome.

Warrior
By Annabel Clifton
The headband the girl is having fun dressing up with is summery because summer is a very happy season where people take things less seriously. I feel I have captured this aspect well in the image. The soft light created by the shelter of trees and their shadows makes the image bright without bleaching out detail. The shallow depth of field draws the attention to the subject's activity. However next time I should work on the bleached out detail by some of the sun such as the arm. The composition works really well with where i have positioned the head in the corner. The use of black and white gives a past time happy family feel which often lingures in summer months.

Summer's portrait
By Annabel Clifton

Again the care-free happy attitude captured in this image symbolises summer. Also i felt the sunglasses were an important aspect to capture as these too as very summery. This composition works well becasue of the face is captured in the corner of the frame giving the illusion the model is bent over with happiness and laughter. The background is built up with brightly multi-tonal trees (again another symbol of summer). I feel I should maybe experiment with landscapes on a summer day to express this summer idea. However I feel this way equally gives out the summer impression.

Summer's Portrait
By Annabel Clifton

The condensation on the cup captures the thirst that you constantly feel in summer and the need for cool drinks like this. The angle I took the photograph with was right on the floor, this captures another aspect of summer, just laying in the grass. The flip flop placed in the background is another summery feature.

Alchoscape
By Annabel Clifton

The light captured off the bottles is effective and gives an "at night" feeling adding to the wild essence. If done again i feel i couls get more bottles in to get a chaos atmosphere with the crowding. This is my least favoiourite image, I feel it's a bit bland.

Beer Goggles
By Annabel Clifton

Part of my wild on a night out photographs this one captures the alcohol's effect that often make some people's nights more wilder than they would have been otherwards. With this image I've focused though two empty glasses resembling two eyes after the two glasses of alcohol has been emptied. Here you can see the image of the model changes, resulting in bad realisations in the morning. However i think i should have paid more attention to what was in the frame. More table would have worked better I think than more ceiling.

Dance floor
By Annabel Clifton

This candid shot works well with this type of image as people would be too self conscious to dance properly and really show the atmosphere. The composition of the hand and the light to fill the negative space works really well, also the people facing the other way creates a sense of lots of people dancing.

When Jug Met Straw
By Annabel Clifton

On the night out I tried to capture the little idiosyncrasies of the night that would make an interesting photograph and capture the wilder parts. Here the two girls are drinking from a jug out of straws. The composition is good as the jug is the main focus. The expressions are slightly mischiefivous which I like about this shot. However if i was doing this picture again I would try different angles and place the jug in different places in the frame to make it more interesting.

Take Two: Dance floor
By Annabel Clifton

Another candid shot that went really well. I captured the laughing, singing and dancing on the dance floor. Next time to improve this shot I could put it on a lower shutter speed to create blurred dancing.

To healthy livers (Results Toast)
By Annabel Clifton

Here I capture the results day toast to good results. I like this way of capturing this as it it's not always clear what it's about. I think this would be more sucessful if it was landscape instead.

The sillhouette of the people around gives a nice feeling of being in a crowd watching. And the lighting's quiet soft so features aren't there.

Really like how it's central and a good pose with nice colours.

Silhouettes are also nice here giving being in a crowd feeling again. Also love the colours captured.

The lady in the ring of fire, with lighting is very nice. Good angle on it too.

I love the messiness of this and how it lights up the whole frame.

Lighting is very effective here how the lightning is captured. However a bit blurry and would be nice if I'd have had a tripod at hand to get the right shot.

Attempt One: Test shooting

Glider
By Annabel Clifton

I like this image as the colour is really nice between the cloud, and the position of the glider. However this is ineffective as there is too much noise in this image due to zoom being used on the camera. If I was to do this again I would work on this point. Also the simplicity of it I would keep and try to capture again. This fits in with the topic due to gliding being a wild activity.

                                                         Hot Air Balloon
                                                      By Annabel Clifton

Again the simplicity capture in this image is agreeable but the image lacks in detail which could be improved on future outings. The colour of the sky and barn captured is nice, however if the balloon was more vibrant the photograph would work a lot better as there would be more focus on the subject and not the shed. However I do like the almost silhouette of the barn in this image and feel it mutes it down to put the attention on the balloon. Again I have inturpreted the topic in an activity being wild.

Retreat
By Annabel Clifton

This picture is effective as the track leads the eye into the rest of the image. The opening at the end of the field is also pleasing to the eye as then the picture continues until the horizon. I also like the shadow of the puppy as it adds a new depth to the photograph, and the pose that the puppy is positioned in is perfect that complments the composition. The lighting is also very good as it was around 7pm in summer it created lovely shadows. To improve this next time a lower angle may work better so there is more focus on the puppy.

                                                                    Sunset
                                                              By Annabel Clifton

Here I experimented with silhouettes by playing with the aperture on the camera. I found by ignoring the lightmeter reading and increasing the aperture a silhouette formed. The hot air balloon image inspired me to photograph this more. The colours capture, i think, are beautiful in the sky and has captured sweeping clouds across the sky. I also like the plant's silhouette, which embellishes the blackened outline.

Thorne Bush
                                                                   By Annabel Clifton

This was my first attempt at macro photography in this project. The branch going across at the top of the photograph works with the whole thing. Also the composition of the branch going across so it fills the whole fame is good. I also like how detailed the thorns have come out, matching well with the "wild" theme. Next time I should try a much larger close up of just one thorn as i think this may be interesting, and generally work on my angles. I wanted to capture the thorns though you could actually feel them, this is why I chose macro.

Puppy
                                                                        By Annabel Clifton

Ted in his wildest side... his destructive mode, poseing for the camera. The black and white effect here I have used to symbolised the tiredness and drainedness left by these wild moods on the house and people. the black and white effect also helps to draw attention to the paper in his mouth and his little black nose. this photograph would be improved if he posed more, for example cocked his head to one side. the rule of thirds can be applied to this image due to where I have placed his head, making the image agreeable to the eye.

Flowers
By Annabel Clifton

This is my least favourite image of my test shoot. Due to the sunny contitions i could have controlled better with equiptment such as a lens hood, it bleached out the detail here making this macro shot rubbish. To improve this next time i could reduce its depth of feild making it even more shallower so that only one or two flowers are in focus. Whilst doing this i would control the light better. Maybe I would use a better flower, as this type would look better in monochrome.

Pimm's O'clock
By Annabel Clifton

I wanted to capture the freshness of summer in a photograph which i think Pimm's does well. Also the juicey look of the orange captures the "you can almost taste it" sense, which is also a freshness aspect. The out of focus aspect of this photograph was a happy accident, however i feel it enhances the juiceyness of the fruit and is a technique i shall apply in the future. The swirls of Pimm's at the bottom of the photograph adds more detail. Maybe this would also worked with better focusing however.

Inspiring Photographers

Title: Waterlilies
Photographer: Baron Aldolph De Meyer

STYLE: Delicate with soft detail. It appears more like a painting that a photograph.

COMPOSITION: The rule of thirds has been applied here as you can neatly split the Floating lilies, the glass bowl, and what appears to be water. Again this gives a painting effect as it is commonly used in paintings as well.

TECHNIQUES: Monochrome has been applied to this, this may be due to the lack of colour in the first place the only colour would be the water, reducing the attention on the waterlilies. The photograph also has a shallow depth of field, putting all focus on the lilies.

Tittle: Horse's Morror
Photographer: Miguel Rio Branco

STYLE: Very detailed, which really sets off the photograph and gives a better insight of why the photographer took the image. Its styles very magnified possibly using a macro lens. This zoomed in style brings attention to the seeping eyes and an unhealthy coat of fur.

COMPOSITION: The eye is the centre focus and the lines of muscle on the horse lead the viewer’s eye into the rest of the photo. The blue sky background that has been positioned to merge in from the corner sets off the colour of the fur.

TECHNIQUES: Colour has been used along side a 200mm lens probably or a macro type lens (depending on how close the photographer was at the point of image capture. You can conclude this from the mass of detail captured in the image.
